Nandi Hills - A different Vista

It was around 3.15am on Friday 10Th. Deep and silent was the night. All of a sudden 2 adventure seeking friends started the bike and left the lonely streets of Airport Road to vanish in the darkness of the night. And yes. They were on an exciting journey to see a new vista of the Nandi Hills at the juncture of the day when slowly and steadily mother nature wakes up for a new day.

I and my friend Arunava, started this quest for mother nature on early morning of the Holy Good Friday. It was April 10Th 2009. We started at around 3.15 am from our home towards Nandi Hills situated some 60 KM away from Bangalore city. The bike (Later designated as the
Official Vehicle) was a mighty Bajaj Pulsar. It flew quietly at 80 to 100 Kilometers per hours in a splash of few seconds. We took MG Road and from there reached the route to Bangalore International Airport near Devanahalli. We didn't anticipated that it will be a cold dark night. Barely I put on a light track jacket on myself with my friend Arunava with a casual pullover. But as we stormed the road at 90 Km/h, the cold jet wind was hitting two of us and we both were shivering along the way. We stopped occasionally, to get some warmth from the small tea stalls along the road. We reached Devanahalli at around 4.30am in the morning. It was very dull but the night sky was still and clear.

After reaching Devanahalli, we decided to take a longer break as it was too cold. Also we have some time at hand which we can use to freshen up as we further continue our journey. We parked the bike near some tea stall. Along with us some other bikers also were having tea and smoke. There was a small fire place and everyone was standing in front of it to feel the warmth of the fire. The journey till now was thrilling as the road was empty and it was complete dead of the night. I was looking around, for the nature at night was completely different. You can see creatures and an environment totally contrasting to the normal world. The road was lined with trees and occasionally some small hills ejected out of darkness. I was fully lost in the beautiful features of the night.

Getting some more time to warm up, we started our final endeavour to cover the last stretch of our journey. The top of the Hill was still some 15 Km away from our break point. We started in full enthusiasm to cover the thrilling part as shortly we will start the ascending of the Hill. We drove straight towards the twin mountains of Scandhagiri and Nandi Hills. As we reached the junction where we took a left towards Nandi Hills. The road was good and so we maintained a constant speed of over 70 KM. We crossed paddy fields along the road and some marsh land covered with long and tall tiger grass. The calm night was often disrupted with the sound of strange animals from far distance. We reached the final crossing from where we started our journey towards the hills.

The bottom of the hill was mostly barren land. But once we continued our journey, the dense forest vegetation slowly started manifesting. Although it was dark and obscure at that hour of time but still I could figure out the beauty of nature. We started ascending the hills and Arunava was slowly and steadily steering the bike across the sharp bends. Sometimes we were meeting some other riders on the way who were traversing their way along the hill.

After our exciting journey, we reached the Hill top at around 5.15am. But to our great surprise, we found several enthusiastic folks have already reached there and were waiting for the auspicious moment. We parked the bike in a proper designated place and brought tickets for entering the Hills. The main gate will open at 6.00am in morning.

At 6.00 we entered the main area of the hills. This hill was summer resting place of Tipu Sultan. He used to come here during summer for hunting and to enjoy the view of the hills. Still today we can see the heritage buildings and mighty walls of the fort on the hill. We traced our path along the wall.

By this time, the sky was already getting brighter and brighter. And all I could do was to get ready with my camera to capture the wonderful exotic view from the top of the hills. The sky was light blue. But there was something more to the sky which we saw for the first time. And the first time in my life too.

All I could now see was cloud floating. It covered each and every visible section of the sky. Cloud was floating around each and every corner and it covered all the surrounding hills. Only the top of the hills were visible. I was silent to see the nature at this part of the world. The sunrise was about to happen and the stage was all set for a yet another awesome vista. We went to a place from where we can see the sunrise. And at that moment all we could see was the sun slowly rising from the edge of the world. The clouds were hovering swiftly in the morning sky and the strong breeze was blowing us apart. But we watched this incredible picturesque scenery and took some fine snaps. And all we could do was to capture this astonishing moment in the soul of ours.

We then went to see the Monolithic Bull which was built on the top of the hill. With the first ray of the sun, it was shinning like gold. The bull has been worshipped with Ghee and Oil and was glittering with it. We captured the view of the bull and continued to see other part of the hill.

Reaching the main temple, we offered puja to the Divine goddess. It was a great moment for both of us. The entire environment was electrifying and we were enchanted to be a part of that great morning. The temple was pretty old with the antique Deity. The entire structure was built in separate compartments each housing a different idol. Finally we completed the entire puja and took some lovely photographs of the horticulture along with the natural flora and fauna. All this time we were completely absorbed in the astounding beauty which left an ever lasting impression on both of us. It was after such a long time we came so close to nature and drank the starling beauty of it to the fullest.

We wrapped up our conquest of Nandi Hills by 8.30 am and again left for Bangalore. It was getting hotter and the sun was slowly and steadily spreading out in the sky. We left Nandi Hills with the wonderful serene memories which we gathered from our brief adventurous journey.
